Former sheriff David Clarke said he will ‘b**ch slap’ the media, make them bleed

David Clarke airplane passenger harassment

David Clarke, the controversial former sheriff of Milwaukee, said Saturday he wants to make the media bleed after reports surfaced that the FBI had investigated his emails.

The investigation related to an incident from January when he had a verbal exchange with a fellow airline passenger that allegedly caused Clarke to contact fellow police officers and command them to question the passenger after he stepped off the plane. The FBI reportedly was investigating any potential civil rights violations that occurred during that incident after the passenger, Dan Black, sued for what he said was the violation of his constitutional rights.

Though prosecutors eventually declined to file criminal charges, the news that Clarke’s emails had been under surveillance surfaced last week. And that led Clarke—who has faced controversy for his threats of violence and the four deaths that occurred in his jail in 2016—to go on a social media rant.

In a statement to Law & Crime, Clarke said he was not under FBI investigation, and it doesn’t appear that any media outlet reported that he was still being investigated. Clarke resigned as sheriff in August.

The biggest video game disappointments of 2017

mass effect andromeda video game disappointments

If you were to make a list of the best years for video games, 2017 would surely be close to the top. This year saw Nintendo rise from the ashes and start killing it again. It saw the launch of incredible new games (Horizon: Zero Dawn, Cuphead) and massively successful sequels (Destiny 2, Resident Evil 7).

But we’re not here to talk about the winners. Let’s look at what didn’t work. Here are the biggest video game disappointments in 2017.

1) Mass Effect: Andromeda

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The Mass Effect trilogy ruled the galaxy during the Xbox 360 era. These games introduced us to a new sci-fi setting, complete with alien civilizations, intergalactic councils, and lore as deep as a wormhole. But that was just the backdrop. The story centered around a group of memorable heroes, led by Commander Shepherd, who saved the universe from existential threats.

Expectations were high for the inevitable follow-up, which everyone assumed would kick off a new trilogy of games. But when Mass Effect: Andromeda came out in March, it flopped like a Turian sea bass. The game, made by Bioware Montreal, lacked the heart and excitement of the original trilogy. It was also plagued by bugs and glitches that angry fans passed around online like Citadel credits. Andromeda’s reception was so bad Electronic Arts merged Bioware Montreal into another studio and put the Mass Effect series on ice.

2) Lack of Xbox exclusives

In 2017 Nintendo fans got new installments of Zelda, Mario, Metroid, and Splatoon. Sony diehards got Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier: Automata, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Those were all amazing, well-received games.

Xbox owners weren’t quite so lucky. We got Halo Wars 2, Forza Motorsport 7, and Cuphead. Those are fine games, but none of them were particularly thrilling. The biggest exclusives Microsoft had promised for 2017—Sea of Thieves and Crackdown 3—both got delayed to 2018.

Even in November when Microsoft launched the Xbox One X, literally the most powerful gaming console ever, it didn’t come out alongside a big new game that would show off its power.

Microsoft: Your hardware is great. We just want more exclusive games.

3) Star Wars Battlefront 2

Publisher Electronic Arts had a tough year. The Mass Effect: Andromeda debacle happened early in 2017, and to cap off the year, EA released Star Wars Battlefront 2, a game that could have been a massive hit with fans eager to jump into the Star Wars universe. The key words there: could have. But, shortly before launch, fans got outraged. For starters, it looked like unlocking heroes would take an unreasonable amount of gameplay time. Second, the loot box system seemed to be a “pay to win” scheme.

In response, EA made some major tweaks to the game. Just hours before launch, EA removed all micro-transactions, saying it would bring them back in a more fair way. The fixes came too late for many fans, who promised to boycott both the game and EA in general.

Despite the outcry online and mediocre review scores, Star Wars Battlefront 2 debuted as the number two best-selling game in November, just behind Call of Duty: WWII. So maybe the vocal mob didn’t speak for everyone.

4) 1-2 Switch

When a company debuts a new console, it helps to have a few great games to convince people to buy it. The Nintendo Switch had one killer game at launch: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, one of the best titles of this generation. That was the good news. The bad news was, it also launched the same day as 1-2 Switch, a mini-game collection that failed to wow just about anybody.

1-2 Switch has you and a friend compete in mini-games mostly centered around motion controls. The mini-games are enjoyable enough in party situations, but they’re not very diverse or deep. They seem designed to show off the Switch’s hardware capabilities to friends and family. But if that’s the case, why didn’t Nintendo just pack the game in with every Switch sold? Why does this subpar mini-game collection cost $50? Who knows!

5) Destiny 2 controversies

It seems like Destiny fans are always on a rollercoaster that goes up and down. The first game launched to middling reviews, but still racked up a large player base who kept coming back to shoot aliens and earn gear. By the time the Taken King expansion came out, fans and critics alike had fully come around on the game.

A similar thing is happening with Destiny 2, but in reverse. The game was a major hit when it first launched, thanks to its stellar campaign and enjoyable progression to the Power Level cap. But once enough players reached the limit, they realized there wasn’t much incentive to keep coming back. So fans grew disgruntled until new content came out.

But nearly every time developer Bungie puts out a new update or feature, fans discover some glaring flaw in it and hop online to fume. Cue Bungie’s apology and a promise to be better at communicating in the future. The thing is, nothing ever changes. Destiny 2 is a phenomenal game, but it can’t keep fans happy forever.

Swipe This! I want to reconcile with my ex—but is that just the holiday blues talking?

Email app icon on iPhone with question mark

Swipe This!” is an advice column about how to navigate human relationships and connections in an age when we depend so heavily on technology. Have a question? Email swipethis@thedailydot.com.

. . .

Dear Swipe This!

Like a lot of people do over the holidays, I recently reconnected with my ex. We had sex—the sex was great, it always is—and I felt so happy being with him again. I realized he’s still the love of my life and I want us to make things work. So I wrote him a heartfelt email saying when he’s ready to be happy, he should let me know. It felt good to send it and say what was in my heart.

But then, after I didn’t hear from him for a couple of days, I got anxious and upset. I sent him a text saying I wish I’d never sent the e-mail. And he wrote back, “What e-mail?”

I couldn’t believe it. Part of me was relieved like, “Oh good, maybe it was so late that I didn’t know what I was doing and I never actually sent it”? But then I looked at my outbox and the e-mail did go through! It’s not like him to lie. Also, he’s been asking me to tell him what was in the e-mail, or at least give him the gist of it, and now I’m not sure what to say.

Here’s our backstory: My ex and I were together for three years. Two years ago, he dumped me and I’ve never been more heartbroken. I loved him. I really loved him. I was crying on the floor, eating ice cream in my pjs, wailing, “Why did he leave me when I gave him everything he could ever want?” But I picked up the pieces of my broken heart. I focused on my career and my friends and I thought I was starting to heal. I even started dating someone new. I didn’t feel as connected to this new guy, but he was nice to me and I felt like I was moving forward.

Then last winter my ex and I started hooking up again. I thought maybe we could make it work, but we broke it off in February. I was sad, but I still had the new guy to keep me warm. And I ended up having an amazing year. A lot of good things are happening for me—I’ve been performing a lot—and I’m proud of myself. I have so much that I feel confident about.

But I can’t let go of my ex. I don’t know if it’s the holidays or just the fact that he really is the one for me, but I can’t shake this feeling that I’ll be happier if we’re together again. Then, I think, if he loved me, he would be with me. So I should accept that he doesn’t love me and move on? Or at least have sex with him one last time before New Year’s and then we both pretend the other doesn’t exist anymore and forget this whole mess?

The other thing is, my ex’s family is very religious. I know for a fact that since we broke up he’s been going on dates with women who are more religious, who his family would find more acceptable. I believe in God, but I don’t go to church often. I’m a comedian who tells raunchy jokes about sex, and even though my ex says he supports my career, I think deep down he doesn’t want to be with me because I’m not the kind of “good girl” his family wants him to be with. The other day I was joking around with him and sent him my Instagram top 9. Every picture was me laughing in lingerie or shimmying around in something silky. I was like, “This girl needs to go to church!”

I’m not going to give up my career. I love making people laugh and I love doing what I do. I’m in my late 20s and I know who I am and what I want and what I deserve. And maybe he can’t give me that. But I’ll never love anyone as much as I love him. I know it. And then I think why won’t he love me? Why can’t he accept me and love me the way I love and accept him?

So, what should I do? Should I tell him the truth about what was in the e-mail? Or should I just accept the fact that he doesn’t love me? It’s torturing me!

Sincerely,

Girl Who Needs to Go to Church

. . .

Dear Girl Who Needs to Go to Church,

The end of the year is the perfect time to torture ourselves, don’t you think? Our social media feeds are flooded with pictures of families and couples and babies and bright lights. And all of that holiday cheer can be downright triggering. We start to wonder if we’re happy enough, if our lives are full enough, and if we’ll ever have all the things we want. In the midst of a time when we could be grateful and share the abundance of what we have, many of us start to focus on everything we lack. I’ve done it, you’ve done it, and I’m willing to bet everyone you know and love has fallen victim to this at least once in their lives if not several times per year.

If I had to put a name to it, I would call this special brand of holiday, end-of-the-year grief “the Empty.” The Empty visits each of us and it’s our job to figure out how we’re going to fill it. We can fill it with food or presents. We can fill the empty with an endless rotation of social commitments. We can fill it with booze or sex, or, as you’ve discovered, we can even fill it with connections that have broken our hearts over and over again. The trouble is all of these fixes are temporary and when they wear off, we are left face to face with the Empty once again. And this is when the Empty feels most ominous and most powerful. Because now the Empty is bigger, bloated with the promise of all that could have been and all that we cannot have.

So how do you fill the big, ravenous monster that is your very own Empty? What does the Empty want from you? What can you feed it so that it will finally leave you alone?

I believe the Empty wanted you to write that e-mail. Because the Empty wants us to share what’s in our hearts. It wants our sadness, our grief, our anger, our fear, our knockdown, blowout tantrums. The Empty wants all of it. But it also wants more.

I believe the Empty wants you to take you to church. And I don’t mean midnight mass.

I mean you need to feed your soul until you feel whole. And you can’t do that with food or social media likes or dick. You’ve got to do that with yourself and whatever gives you faith. If you pray, pray. Sing. Dance. Write. Weep. Do whatever you need to do to visit the corners of your heart and soul that need healing. Tend to your pain like you would a beloved pet. Don’t judge it. Just let it be what it is and ask it what it needs. Listen to your pain. It will tell you what to do.

It’s interesting to me that you think the crux of whether or not you can make things work with your ex hinges on the fact that you don’t go to church “enough” to earn his parents approval. Personally, I grew up mixed-faith and have never had a regular church, temple, or mosque in my life. But I have found that when I’m feeling alone and empty—or less-than-whole—reconnecting with my personal spirituality and all the things that give me faith is an essential part of finding my way home. So when you look at that Instagram top nine of a happy girl in seductive lingerie and you say “she needs to go to church,” I don’t think you’re wrong. But I don’t think she needs any moral scolding. Just a healthy dose of attention, kindness, and your own abundant love.

I can’t tell you whether you and your ex can make it work. But I can tell you that end-of-the-year ultimatums don’t have the best track record.

That said, I think you are in great shape to get all the things you want and more. What I hear in your letter is that you are someone who has survived tremendous heartache and still found a way to lean into her joy. You’ve had a great year—you say so yourself! Your career is blossoming. You are confident and you know who you are and what you deserve. So what I’m wondering is, why are you giving one man the power to decide whether or not you can have it? Why should he decide your fate? Aren’t you the confident, sexy, funny one? How did you make all of these other parts of your life blossom? Is he the magic-maker or are you?

You can tell him exactly what your email said. And if it were me, I would. Because I don’t think you can build or re-build a connection with someone from whom you are always hiding your heart. But when you do, I hope you will do so knowing that he is not the one who gets to tell you whether you can have the love you want. You are. You get to say, I deserve love, I deserve acceptance, I deserve a partnership.

And yes, you may never find a man you love quite like you loved him. In fact, it’s almost guaranteed you won’t. Not because no one is as good as him, but because what you shared is unique and specific to the two of you. Your future loves won’t be him. But that doesn’t mean that no one will ever stack up or compare.

This is where your faith has to take the wheel. You have to believe in the possibility of something new—something that surprises you. And if you’re having trouble believing, that’s OK. There are many things we don’t believe in until we see them. But then one day, we do and we’re like, “Wow, so that does exist!”

Consider this: There was a time when you did not know your ex. You had no idea who he was or what he looked like. You had no clue who he would be or how he would open your heart. And so I want you to imagine that there are other people out there who you do not know yet. And you do not know how they can and will love you and stretch your capacity for love and joy.

If you enter this new year with an open heart, I predict you are going to find people who love you in a way that you have never known before. And that is something to look forward to.

Internet Person of the Year: ‘Cash me ousside’ teen Danielle Bregoli

Danielle Bregoli behind steering wheel

The Daily Dot aims to cover the internet’s memes and viral stars with empathy and humanity. Our readers loved to hate Danielle Bregoli in 2017, but she’s a distinctly American success story.

No one moved the needle like Bregoli in 2017, and that’s why the “Cash me ousside” teen turned Bhad Bhabie, would-be rap star, is our Internet Person of the Year.

Dumpster on fire with "2017" on the front Illustration by Jason Reed (Fair Use)

She began as a living meme—no different than any Chewbacca Mom who does something funny and garners attention. Speaking to Dr. Phil in September 2016, she told dissenters they could catch her outside (and presumably fight). We laughed at this long enough for Bregoli to roast David Spade on Instagram and tell us what she thought about James Comey getting fired as FBI director. She even announced, then scrapped, a tour that revolved around her fleeting “Cash me ousside” catchphrase. It was the best decision of her career.

Turning inward and focusing on music, Bregoli’s Bhad Bhabie moniker emerged in August with fun and charismatic hip-hop that appropriated Black culture with good choruses. Our readers overwhelmingly hated songs like “These Heaux,” but as our internal traffic showed, they also couldn’t get enough. By mid-September, she was signed to Atlantic Records. (Atlantic declined to make Bregoli available for this story.)

If 2017 popularized the “Milkshake Duck,” slang for a viral person immediately adored but soon revealed to harbor politically shaky views, then Bregoli is the reverse Milkshake Duck. She was young and foolish, an easy dunking target for the Twitter gallery. But her character proved to be surprisingly strong for a 14-year-old; hell she just gave $65,000 to her mom for Christmas.

We wondered if her internet success stems from a resentful disdain for the sustained prevalence of hip-hop. It runs circles around other genres as the most popular among teens in the U.S., and Bregoli affords many the luxury to openly condemn Black culture without, you know, being outwardly racist.

danielle bregoli person of the year Daily Dot/Facebook

The corollary is that Bregoli is reflective of young Americans everywhere. As Eminem once rapped on “The Real Slim Shady”: “There’s a million of us just like me, who cuss like me, who just don’t give a fuck like me. Who dress like me—walk, talk, and act like me.”

As much as suburban parents may wish, Bregoli is no outsider artist. The breakout rap star is pure id—any Wi-Fi connected Generation Z kid could be her. She is Mother Nature’s daughter—a child born of vlogs and Migos’ “Bad and Boujee.” And that’s great because the kids are fine.

Bregoli speaks to the universal fun of reckless teen angst. Her music shows agency and a welcome subversive streak. U2’s Bono recently caught backlash for saying that today’s music could use more “testosterone.” I think what he meant to say is that Imagine Dragons suck, but he should have been listening to “Hi Bich.”

Makeup artist re-envisions Disney princesses with an Indian spin

Makeup Artist Hamel Patel recreates the looks of Disney Princesses with Desi influences

As the age-old Disney song in Pinocchio goes, “When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything your heart desires will come to you.”

It’s a tune of hope and wonder, but for many Black and brown Disney fans who grew up pretending to be the princesses they admired, the verse is purely symbolic. No, it seemed that getting a Disney princess of color (who wasn’t whitewashed) wasn’t done by the will of the heart.

For some fans who’ve been eager to see themselves represented beyond Pocahontas, Mulan, Jasmine, Tiana, and Moana, they’ve taken matters into their own hands.

In model and makeup artist Hamel Patel’s interpretation, that meant giving her favorite princesses a Desi twist, introducing Southeast Asian and Indian influences into hair, makeup, and wardrobe to create an Instagram series of princesses that she would have wanted to see herself represented in as a child.

“Growing up I always wished there was a Disney Princess I could relate to, one that represented where I came from. So I came up with this idea many months ago and I’m so happy how they turned out,” Patel wrote on her Instagram post introducing the project. “Introducing outfits/makeup looks inspired by the eight original Disney Princesses we all grew up watching, with a little Desi twist!”

“One bite, and all your dreams will come true,” she captioned her photo of Snow White.

As her Cinderella look says, “Even miracles take a little time.”

Of course her Sleeping Beauty look was a real Sleeping “Beti,” the Hindi word for daughter.

Patel’s “under the sea” look for Ariel would be remiss without the mermaid’s precious hair-combing fork.

And her genuine take of Jasmine is so far beyond the ambiguous Arabian influences in Aladdin.

Beauty and the Beast is “Bhoomi and the Bewaqoof.”

Pocahontas gets her due with Patel’s inspired take: “She goes wherever the wind takes her.”

And Mulan could not look more fierce, begging for all women to “find your inner warrior.”

An all-Indian Bollywood reboot of your favorite Disney princess films? Looks like Patel might be just the makeup artist to get the project rolling.

Anime Fan Rides Bike 250 Miles To Tokyo To Attend Comiket Convention

comiket convention feat (1) (1)

Where is the line between an ordinary fan and hardcore fan? Maybe the line seems blurry, but here we have a great example of a true hardcore fan, so you’ll know when you meet someone similar. In this case, we talk about an anime fan who ride 250 miles on a bicycle to attend Comiket convention in Tokyo.

Winter Comiket, the cold-season iteration of Japan’s twice-a-year mega-gathering of anime otaku and doujinshi (self-published comics) artists, is being held in this time of the year, during New Year’s holidays, so it attracts fans from all over the world.

Aichi Prefecture, known as Twitter user @DJ_FLANDRE, lives about 400 km from Tokyo where Comiket convention is being held. For an ordinary fan, what’s to expect would be to buy a bullet train ticket and to get to the destination in about two hours. Yet, a hardcore fan would do something less expected and much more complicated, just like @DJ FLANDRE did.

@DJ FLANDRE made 400 kilometers (about 249 miles) journey from his hometown to Tokyo by bicycle in order to attend Comiket.

anime fan rides bike 250 miles to Tokyo to attend Comiket convention 1 (1)

If that wasn’t enough, he didn’t use some mad sports bike but a “mama chari” (from “mama chariot”), the heavy-framed bicycle with a shopping basket commonly used by Japanese housewives. Hardcore or what?!

@DJ_FLANDRE started pedaling on Christmas morning, hopping on the bike at 9 a.m. on December 25.

How did he get this idea anyway?! He asked Tweeter for their opinion how should he get to Comiket last summer: by bus, by train or by bicycle… As you might have guessed, the third option got most of the votes.

View of the sea magically appeared to him after 100 kilometers (62 miles) of pedaling.

This was his Christmas dinner… He got a monster appetite from all that pedaling!

You run on these when you’re biking … The bike’s basket, stocked with energy and protein drinks.

@DJ_FLANDRE rolled into Shizuoka City where he spent a night.

The journey continues…

It’s time for lunch again!

Many ups and downs on this road! He took the coastal tour this time.

Passing through Atami, a seaside hot spring resort town. Rather than splurge on such luxurious accommodations, @DJ_FLANDRE kept pedaling for five more hours after reaching Atami until he got to the city of Chigasaki where he finished his second Day and 330 kilometers (205 miles) in total.

Next day he reached Yokohama at 10:38. He even had time to meet up with some local friends for yet another protein-packed meaty meal.

At 3:12, he crossed over into Kawasaki, the northernmost city in Kanagawa and Tokyo’s southern neighbor.

…and at 3:41, he was on the far shore, in Tokyo!

@DJ FLANDRE enjoying Comiket after 400 km of biking on “mama cheri”! Bravo!

The best songs of 2017: A long Spotify playlist

Illustration of a person wearing headphones and listening to music.

Music is a data dump in the age of streaming, and most of us are passive listeners who don’t have time to find new stuff. Let us save you from another cold algorithm: We’ve curated a nerdy and urgent Spotify playlist of 360 essential songs from 2017.

The music spans all the popular Western genres, and required eight humans to assemble. It’s a vibrant quilt of a mixtape that you can listen to in a day. As the meme goes: If you play SZA’s “Prom” at exactly 12:39am on on New Year’s Eve, Taylor Swift’s “New Year’s Day” will end at exactly midnight. Start 2018 properly.

The 2017 Long Player, a Daily Dot tradition since 2012, is here to bring you home.

Thanks to mix contributors Joshua Bradshaw, Jay Hathaway, Blake Hurtik, John Meller, Austin Powell, Tara Seetharam, and Harrison Yeager.

Check out past iterations of the year-end mix:
