Multiple people were injured in a violent incident in lower Manhattan on Tuesday, according to media and eyewitness reports, and one person was taken into custody.
The incident took place on west side of Manhattan, near Chambers St. and West St. The New York City Police Department issued an advisory on Tuesday afternoon telling people of street closures and to “expect many emergency personnel in the area.”
The department also confirmed one person was in custody. A spokesperson for the NYPD said they were responding to reports of “shots fired” in lower Manhattan.
Tom Winter, of NBC News, reported that the police department confirmed a shooting occurred and that “multiple people have been shot.” The New York Post reports that a man fired a gun from his car around 3:15pm ET. Video from the scene on Twitter shows some people lying on the ground following the incident. Others were reportedly injured after being hit by a vehicle.

At least five people were hurt when a vehicle hit them along Hudson Street and Chambers Street, Pix11 reported, adding that those injured may have been on bicycles. The vehicle was reportedly a Home Depot rental pickup truck.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was “briefed” on the incident and there is no “active threat” according to the mayor’s press secretary.
