John Williams tapped to write the theme for next year’s Han Solo movie

John Williams Solo theme

John Williams, the legendary film composer who created the iconic scores for the entire main Star Wars series, will compose the theme for the upcoming Han Solo movie.

But he won’t be scoring the entire movie, Williams told Variety in an interview. Instead, John Powell will compose the remainder of the score for Solo: A Star Wars Story, set to be released May 25.

“His assignment is something I’m very happy about,” Williams said. “What I will do is offer this to John, and to [director] Ron Howard, and if all parties are happy with it, then I will be happy. … John [Powell] will complete the score. He will write all the rest of the themes and all of the other material, which I’m going to be very anxious to hear.”

Williams wrote the entire score for the eight main Star Wars movies, including The Last Jedi. But he was not at all associated with 2016’s Rogue One, and as the Verge opines, “his absence is noticeable” and the movie “experienced a bumpy path with its own score.”

Powell’s film work includes Bourne Identity and How to Train Your Dragon.
