‘Portlandia’ preview gently mocks true crime podcasts

portlandia npr podcast

Between all of the podcasts, documentaries, and mockumentaries out in the world, we’re obsessed with true crime, but what goes behind making it is nowhere near as glamorous (or spontaneous) as it sounds.

IFC has released a new Portlandia sketch ahead of its upcoming season about the less prestigious side of podcasting. The Portland Police Department allowed a couple of NPR podcasters to follow them as it investigates a murder—it was a choice between them and body cameras—and it doesn’t go as everyone planned. Not every crime makes for a gripping true crime drama, but the podcasters are determined, using everything from blunt descriptors in front of their subjects to pushing the story forward on their own. (And it wouldn’t be a true podcast without the Blue Apron plug.)

And as always, the background music is always on point.

Portlandia returns Jan. 18.
