Snapchat strikes back at Facebook, releases its own year-in-review videos

snapchat memories year in review

Just because 2017 as a whole was terrible doesn’t mean you didn’t individually have a good year. Maybe you got married, bought your first house, or graduated from school. Whatever the moment, Snapchat is here to help you relive it.

The messaging app is releasing a feature called “Your 2017 Story,” which packages snaps you saved to “Memories” throughout the year into a single video chronicling the past 365 days.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because Facebook has been generating these year-in-review videos for the past few years. But you really can’t fault Snapchat for copycatting. Zuckerberg’s social network, and its partner-in-crime Instagram, shamelessly ripped off the ephemeral messaging app’s popular Stories feature to great success. Facebook is even testing a “streaks” feature similar to the one that keeps teens glued to its rival.

To view your Snapchat flashback of 2017, just press the “Memories” icon at the bottom center of your screen (under the camera shutter button) and select “A Look Back at 2017” under the “All” tab. The saved snaps are automatically put together for the video, but you can edit them if you choose. To do so, press “Edit Story” and tap the “X” icon on any memories you want to delete. Once you’re done, you can save the video and send it to your friends.

If you don’t see the new feature in the Memories section, it’s either because you haven’t updated the app or you don’t have enough memories saved. Considering how 2017 went, we wouldn’t blame you.
