Dads can be hard to Christmas shop for, but this teenager knew just what to get her stepdad.
On Christmas Eve, 18-year-old Makayla Dabney presented her stepdad with a box containing several other wrapped boxes. The envelope buried inside all the wrapping contained adoption papers.
A video posted on YouTube shows Stephen Dabney tearing up as he realizes what the gift means. (If you don’t want to watch all the unwrapping, skip ahead to about 5:30.)
As her stepdad is unwrapping—and kids and family members bounce around among the excitement—the teenager gives a heartfelt speech.
“All the times I was sick, who did I want?” Makayla Dabney says, and her stepdad points to himself.
She reportedly said she had a dream in which she asked him to adopt her and knew that adoption papers would be the perfect Christmas gift.
“It was very memorable and exciting because I had something so big planned and only a few family members knew about it,” she said.
Her stepdad reportedly helped raise her from the time she was 5, and her mother said he “stepped up when he didn’t have to.”
