Teens walk out of class over racist Snapchat messages

Haywood High school students protest racist social media post

Racism is alive and well across America, and teens can be some of the most vicious culprits. However, after several students’ racist Snapchat conversation hit social media, others at Haywood High School decided to fight back and walk out of class.

The protest emerged after the Snapchat messages, allegedly from the school’s baseball team, spread online. In the message, one student asked if there was a “no go on stringing a ni***r up?” and said they should “find one Black guy and make an example for sure.” Another student also chimed in, saying the group should “hang the ni***r lovers and make an example out of them.” The students who posted the messages on social media were later forced to write 10-page papers as punishment, but students of color were furious that the student body was not told about the incident immediately, WREG reports.

So on Monday, around 200 students from Haywood High School organized a sit-in, after which led to a walkout on school property. Many of the students involved were people of color, and some spoke to WREG regarding their anger over the school’s handling of the situation.

“When you talkin’ about hanging someone, what is a 10-page paper?” student Malik Green told the station. “What does that do? That does nothing. And it solves nothing.”

The high school is currently engaging in an “in-depth” investigation into the post, with the school’s superintendent vowing to punish those who created it and anyone who knew about the messages and said nothing.

“We are completing a full investigation and will then take appropriate action based on the findings and following school board policy,” the school’s superintendent told WREG.
