Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) called to his Twitter followers to help him reach 3 million followers, and it has not gone the way he’d probably have hoped.
On Monday afternoon, McCain urged his followers to “spread the word” and help his account reach 3 million followers. The call came just just days after McCain voted in favor of the controversial Republican tax bill, and Twitter was quick to remind of him that.
“We’re only 74 Twitter followers away from 3M – spread the word & help us reach this big milestone!” McCain wrote.

Following the tweet, McCain began losing followers at a rapid pace. He started with 2,999,926 followers on Monday afternoon, and as of 4:15 ET on Monday he had already dropped to 2,988,876.
That means he’s losing more than 180 followers per hour. The tweet has also been thoroughly ratioed–with 11,000 comments compared to just 747 retweets and 2,100 likes as of Monday evening.

Much of Twitter’s rage seemed directed toward his vote on the Republican tax bill, which was passed early Saturday morning by a slim margin, despite being laden with handwritten notes and changes.
